Fishing in Newcastle upon Tyne

Angel of the North Fishing Lakes is a premier fishing complex of beautiful carp and coarse fishing lakes, in County Durham, near Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. The three lakes include a pleasure and match carp fishing lake and extend over more than 8 acres of water, set in 15 acres of carefully landscaped grounds.

Angel of the North Fishing Lakes: a Centre of Excellence offering two fantastic mixed coarse lakes and a carp lake, together with excellent facilities. The complex is run by the Code of Angling Best Practice and fish welfare AA rules to enable coarse anglers to enjoy safe, relaxed angling.

Tynemouth is a superb winter cod beach offering shore fisherman a wonderful choice of marks. At the north end of beach adjacent to Cullercoats harbour is a maze of rocky skeers and small sandy bays. In the middle section is the most popular spot, known locally as Stoney Bottom, which is a series of rocky ledges only accessible on big tides with the reputation of producing big cod. The beach is fairly flat from here down to the south end at Bathing Pool Skeer. Winter storms transform it into a network of sandbanks and deep gullies, which hold a good head of fish. All of these marks can produce some tremendous bags of cod when a good easterly sea is running. The rock edges are fishable approximately two hours either side of low water, but the beach can be productive at all stages of the tide. Whiting have made an appearance in recent years and hopefully this trend will continue. Sections of the beach are popular with surfers and the whole area is subject to very strong tides created by a series of offshore reefs.

Flatfish, codling and bass can be caught from the shore, especially Spittal and Gosswick Beaches. Bass and pollock can be caught in summer from some of the rock marks around the Needle’s Eye area with spinners, plugs and lures worth a try. Marks around the pier and harbour area also sometimes produce mullet during very calm conditions in summer.
